It was his belief that all humans have an instinct that pushes them to grow and develop into completion and this lifelong process was what he called individuation: a state where we are no longer “divided”.

Now, what does Jung mean by individuation or un-divided? It can be understood like this: we have explored both our inner landscapes and outer environments, we have heightened awareness with regards to our persona (social “mask”), we have acknowledged our personal “shadow” and take care not to project it onto those around us, we have an understanding of the anima (feminine energy in men) or the animus (masculine energy in women), we have recognized the infinite force of the unconscious on our daily acts and communication and we are humbled by it.

Maybe it would be helpful to illustrate with some examples of “dividuals”. We can see people who seem to only thrive in the world of extraversion (excessive traveling, excessive planning of activities, excessive communicating on “exterior” subjects) and feel uncomfortable in moments of solitude or with sharing part of their “inner” person. The opposite of course would be true for dividuals only comfortable in the world of introversion. Other dividuals move through life with a persona so thick that we never have the impression of knowing who the real person is beneath. Dividuals with a massive shadow are people we gladly walk away from because they continually project that “darkness” or weight onto us, making us feel lousy after even a simple exchange. A man who has not integrated his anima will be the first one to make a cruel joke about male homosexuality, it can also be someone who is goal and performance oriented but unable to put words on an emotion or feeling (Emotional Intelligence). A woman who has not integrated her animus always needs to be in command and has a rampart of preconceived and rationalized opinions that she communicates to the world as if she were the owner or author.

True colors: a coaching story

Everyone’s heard the song. We don’t show our true colors often enough. We generally save them for a select few and even then we choose the colors we feel ready to share and leave the others aside. It could be interesting to ask ourselves why we do this. Why do we willingly share the bright happy colors and try to hide the darker colors we’re less proud of? And why do we avoid facing those darker colors ourselves and quickly try to slap a more “acceptable” color on top of it? Whether you are my colleague, my friend, my boss, or the love of my life—show me your true colors and I will respect you. Show me the color of your joy, your enthusiasm, your pride, your serenity. And, please, show me as well the color of your disappointment, your embarrassment, your frustration, your anger, your jealousy or your fear because those are also your colors. You are bright and dark, just as I am. How boring our communication would be if there were no contrasts!

I finished coaching a man yesterday who has been working on one of his dark colors with my support over the past 9 months. The first day I met him he said, “I’m full of self-doubt.” I agreed to work with him because of the courage he showed me that day. Here he was: 46 years old, a manager of 60 people, been in the same “psychological pattern” for years, suddenly wanting to place the pattern on the table and try to figure out how to work on it. So many people would turn away or attempt to cover it up instead. Yesterday he said that he felt like he had been wearing a backpack full of bricks all these years and now it’s no longer there. He also said he had the impression that the pieces had come together somehow. This is Bach to my coaching ears. He will be a manager of integrity now: the root of that word is the Latin integer meaning wholeness or soundness.

Hall, Geert Hofstede, Fons Trompenaars, Craig Storti, William Isaacs, C.G. Everything changes when we leave our monocultural setting: different approaches to work, different decision-making methods, different communication patterns, different ways of viewing time, different ways of viewing hierarchy, etc. Given all those differences, people on mixed-culture teams tend to lose their “landmarks”. It is crucial to support groups who need to reach company goals in a multicultural environment because for many, cultural differences, if left unattended, can lead to high stress levels, mistrust and even conflict.
However, if people are given a common framework to evolve in, multicultural teams can be extremely positive and rich environments. This type of workshop helps participants to acknowledge differences, discover similarities and then go beyond… to build relationships that will be supportive, proactive and creative. My inspiration for this type of work comes from: E.T. Hall, Geert Hofstede, Fons Trompenaars, Craig Storti, William Isaacs, C.G.
Jung.

Leadership

A survey, conducted by the International Executive Panel at Egon Zehnder, revealed that integrity is the most important quality of a leader. The survey respondents included business people from companies in France, England, Germany, and the United States.
So, is there a path towards integrity?
The term "integrity" evokes such moral qualities as honesty and responsibility. It also suggests the quality of someone "whole". Its etymology is "integer", which signifies "whole", and the word refers to someone able to erase the internal divisions that characterize all of us and produce negative behaviors if they remain unknown. These unidentified pieces can easily become internal tyrants that take control.
The road to "Individuation", described by Carl Jung, is the journey in which the divided person becomes an "in-dividual" or un-divided. The process of Individuation and the path to integrity are, therefore, closely linked and can be of interest to anyone in a leadership role, or to anyone wanting to improve their self-leadership. My leadership classes are based on and inspired by the work of C.G. Jung.

Mes Stages

Intercultural Awareness

Even if twenty years ago we sensed that communicating across cultures was a high stakes endeavor, today we can perfectly measure this, particularly in our region of France where numerous companies live the richness and the challenges of working in an intercultural context.

In the past couple decades, numerous publications have appeared on the market as well as abundant training in the domain of intercultural business: “Understanding Americans—How to negotiate with the Chinese—The German Way”
Simple questions do not always have simple answers and in order to truly gain something from a cross-cultural awareness seminar, we must keep in mind that more than anything else, the most crucial question here is intercultural communication…. From that starting point, just as in the domain of interpersonal communication, we must address a series of questions: « Who are we? How do we think? What is our « world image »? How does current society help and hinder? What are our cultural credos and myths? »

Information that we can find about this or that culture and recipe-type books with detailed dos and don’ts are often of great interest because they give us the basic “music theory” of cross-cultural encounters; but knowing the notes does not suffice to make a musician, and knowing this or that specific characteristic about a given culture does not necessarily make us capable of communicating well across cultures.

Sometimes this “recipe” approach can even hinder communication, making us focus on the other person, making us forget that intercultural communication concerns at least two cultures and at least two individuals (subjects). If we disregard this aspect, we will be as prepared for multicultural work as 19th century explorers would have been if they had read “Aborigines for Dummies” before meeting native tribes—they would have been able to avoid a few errors but their “scientific eyes” (that looked at the others as if they were objects instead of subjects) would not have been modified. Any true discovery of the other might begin by first taking a glance at oneself.

That sentence has been growing inside and today I see, but more importantly I feel, what she means. Compassion is holding a woman’s hand as she moves closer to death but it is also reaching out to someone in good health, someone whose desk is not so far from our own, someone who may have more insecurities/fears/pain than we do. The spirit of the times in the world of business is much more about conquest and competition than communication and compassion; we focus on “being the best” but not necessarily on being good. Maybe it’s a question of courage (from the Latin cor meaning heart): if we had the courage to step away from ourselves, from our “position”, from our persona, we might be able to give something of real value to someone else and realize that the journey to reach our end-of-the-year objectives is as important as the final result. Although the etymology of compassion is to suffer with, it’s not only in that regard that we need compassion in management. In compassion, I see compass: we need to show the way and steer the project and bring everyone home safely. In compassion, I also see passion: as managers we need to share our own passion and also strive to understand the desires and passion of our team members because if we know what gives them the energy to come to work every day, won’t we know how to motivate them better?

FIRO-B

Psychologist and social scientist Will Schutz developed the FIRO theory after working for the Navy during the Korean War; his task was to help the military build strong teams that would not only withstand the pressures of living in submarines but thrive and reach high performance as well. FIRO-B (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior) is the self-assessment instrument associated with Schutz’s theory which explores three dimensions of interpersonal relations: Inclusion, Control and Openness. It is a systemic approach that looks at how an individual behaves towards others and how he would like others to behave towards him.

Do I make the effort to include others?

Do I enjoy having a lot of contact with others?

How much do I want others to include me in their activities and give me a sense of belonging?

Do I make the effort to influence and control others?

Do I seek responsibility and authority or am I more comfortable when others give me instruction and direction?

Do I show appreciation and concern openly?

Do I share my opinions and feelings easily?

Do I enjoy hearing the concerns of others?

It provides insight about group compatibility because a profile can be made combining the individual scores. Today the key objective of this tool is to enable individuals and teams to identify behaviors that help and hinder group performance. Schutz strongly believed that, more than anything else, his questionnaire was a wonderful pretext for dialogue and saw the scores as a photo of a group on a given day and not a permanent assessment.

I am certified to administer this instrument.

FIRO-B

Best communication book I read this year

William Isaacs’ Dialogue and the Art of Thinking Together wins hands down. I actually bought it when it came out in 1999 and it has been staring down at me from my bookshelves since then. Isn’t that strange how we pick things up right at the perfect time?

If we thought we knew what Dialogue was, we were wrong. If we recall our last “heated” business meeting or discussion, it is clear that we were not involved in Dialogue. What is Dialogue? According to William Isaacs, it is when we voice ideas openly in a safe “container” while listening, respecting and suspending. In order to get there, one has to stop gripping certainty and personal beliefs and leave the door open for all that is unknown, for all that is unsolved, and for all that is capable of gracing the moment. When people make it to Dialogue, they are no longer dividing or fragmenting their ideas but rather joining a sense of wholeness and connectedness. At the end of Dialogue, there has been a journey and all participants can acknowledge that they have gone somewhere they had not imagined when they had first come together.

Erickson's donkey

Psychotherapist Milton H. Erickson was a master at using metaphor and was truly capable of grasping the image his patients had of the world in order to obtain his desired therapeutic result. For example there was a case where a patient was convinced he was Jesus. After other doctors had unsuccessfully attempted to help him, Dr. Erickson pulled the man aside and told him that he had heard the guy had done some carpentry in the past. The patient, surprised, answered “yes”. When Dr. Erickson placed an order for bookshelves for the clinic, the patient, unable to carry out the task, began the process of freeing himself from this paralyzing identity.

Erickson apparently had the same gift as a child because he told the story of being on a farm one day as a young boy and watching a stable hand desperately try to pull a donkey into a stable. The donkey had planted itself firmly in the ground and was not going to budge. Again and again, the man yanked with all his force and scoffed when the boy asked if he could give it a try. Young Erickson tugged so hard in the opposite direction, on the tail, that the donkey literally flew into the stall. This metaphor is presented as food for thought: I decline all responsibility if you decide to start pulling your immobile colleagues by the tail…

Faites votre propre mini stage d'AT

This does not mean we are childish, but childlike and childlike is sacred as all the religions of the world say. Even as adults we have access to this sacred part. This sometimes scares off the engineers in my courses—"What? What is she saying? She can’t be serious. I came to this course to learn, not play around."
Why is it we have that resistance to an absolute treasure? How destructive could it be if for, say, five minutes we let go of our adult judgments and assumptions and let ourselves view the situation differently, with nothing obstructing our view?

Crossing cultures can offer small findings and enormous discoveries. Cafés are considered such a banal element in French culture that I wonder sometimes if French people are aware of how unique they are to foreigners. As an American, I will never find going to a café a mundane experience. Cafés are true communication centers here. Things happen in cafés: people spread news, friends are reunited, deals are settled, issues are discussed. You see people nodding in agreement and shaking their heads "non", offering a drink, yelling at one another, slapping someone’s shoulder in a friendly manner. You see couples fighting and then kissing, you learn that "the guy over there is selling cèpes (the caviar of mushrooms) at a great price", you hear a woman announce that her son has finally passed his driving license. It makes me wonder about other places in the world: where and how do people exchange information in your country?

Team building

Each company has its own motivation for doing a team building course: to integrate newly hired staff, to brainstorm on company issues outside the office or to promote better team spirit. Whatever the objective is, I conduct team building courses that will help your group open up lines of communication and reinforce interpersonal relationships; my role could be seen as Dialogue Enabler. I am committed to helping participants go from discussion (whose etymology signifies “to shake or break up”) to dialogue (dia logos = flow of meaning, together). Members of any team can benefit from being given a safe place in which they can share their professional expectations and challenges, build mutual understanding and respect, and explore team values. I often begin one of these workshops with a tool that will give participants a common language and approach to understanding human behaviour and which also serves as a solid foundation that they can refer to after the seminar. Some of the tools that I use are: Myers Briggs Type Indicator, FIRO-B, or Transactional Analysis. Creative communication and awareness raising are both the underlying themes and ultimate objectives of such a workshop.

How important is it for me to keep that bridge? Do I want to fix the bridge or fix the blame? Transactional Analysis is a valuable tool for self-understanding and for understanding how others function and relate to the world. This course is interesting for anyone who wants to work in a more pleasant atmosphere, to deal more effectively in delicate professional situations and to understand the roots of conflict and how to deal with conflict in the future.

My Workshops

We all know communicating is a fundamental need without having to consult Maslow. French psychoanalyst Françoise Dolto called communication the law of the living and yet it’s not easy in spite of pigeons, smoke signals, morse code, snail mail, telephone, e-mail, text messages, video conferences, chat, webcam, etc. We have all the means and capabilities to exchange information and it is still so challenging to communicate in a constructive way with our colleagues, hierarchy, friends, partners. How much of our daily existence is spent communicating with others? On a scale between unsatisfactory and extremely satisfying, where do we place our own communication? Why is there little meaningful dialogue? Why is it so difficult to communicate with certain people—the complainers, the victims, the lazy, the unmotivated, the aggressive? What I offer in my courses is a variety of approaches and tools and my trainees can choose which ideas “speak” to them. If you are interested in taking a step towards self-awareness, if you sense that communicating well with ourselves is a prerequisite for sound communication with others, and if you wish to dive into the vast mystery of human behaviour... these courses will interest you.

Analytical psychology highlights certain patterns that disrupt and complicate interpersonal communication, intercultural communication and team communication. I also present these mechanisms in my courses because if they remain unknown or unconscious, these perturbing elements can take control. One effective way of dethroning these “internal tyrants” seems to be by simply welcoming them and integrating them into our consciousness. My experience in this profession has revealed time and again that the deeper our level of consciousness, the more confidence we have: self-awareness and self-confidence are, for me, intimately linked.

Here are some short presentations of the kinds of workshops that I enjoy facilitating. Each course is specially designed and personalized to meet your group’s needs.
